Event Details

As part of this year’s Black History Month celebrations in the UK, Nova is staging an online collaboration with Chris Arning, of Creative Semiotics. We will be shining a light on an aspect of the black experience that is often overlooked:
Let’s Talk About Race: Mixed Race Identity Through A Semiotic Lens
Chris is a specialist in semiotics (the study of implicit cultural patterns in communication) and how we are all inculcated into racialised identities. He will present a combination of lived experience and his reflections on race and identity from the semiotic perspective. He will cover his upbringing in the UK and how he has sought to both reconcile himself to and move beyond the black-white binary, the evolution of societal views on mixed race and how racism affects self-image.
This session will be relevant to all those who identify as mixed race, have mixed race children and those interested in diversity, inclusion and involved in anti-racism education.
Chris is a brand consultant, performance poet and educator, and also a British mixed race person.
The recommended minimum age is 16+.
