Rapunzel at Southbank Centre

Tumble into a tale full of fight, passion and longing with Carol Ann Duffy’s family-friendly dance-theatre retelling of Rapunzel, presented by ballet LORENT.

This take on the fairy tale brings together a collection of world-class collaborators: former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy; composer Murray Gold, of Doctor Who, Gentleman Jack and It’s A Sin; and Michele Clapton, an award-winning costume designer who’s worked on Game of Thrones, The Crown and Mamma Mia.

The production is narrated by actor Lesley Sharp of The Full Monty.

Rapunzel is choreographed and directed by Liv Lorent MBE, and the score is by Royal Northern Sinfonia.

With a large cast of dancers and children, this sensational story creates an unforgettable show for family audiences that is relatable in its emotions and fantastical in its design.

Carol Ann Duffy’s glorious Rapunzel is told from the imagination of her parents, whose baby girl was taken by the witch.

The witch has tamed wild creatures to keep her garden safe from intruders, until one day the Wife’s craving for the Rampion tempts the Husband to steal it…

Our Rapunzel is a fighter who rescues herself from the imprisonment of the tower, and saves her Prince as much as he saves her.

“This energetic production has so much to offer the whole family. A perfectly playful introduction to ballet; expect football-inspired dance moves, giant balloons and a scooter-riding prince!” – North East Family Fun
